From affected legislation to affecting legislation

Where a provision is amended or otherwise affected by another legislative provision, a link will appear in the annotation that gives authority for the amendment or effect. The reference in the annotation to the affecting provision will be in red font underlined in red.

Clicking on this link will take you to the affecting provision.

When you navigate a link from the affected legislation to the affecting legislation, you will be taken to the version of the affecting provision which gives rise to the effect. For example, clicking on the red hyperlink in the annotation illustrated above would take you to paragraph 2 in Schedule 3 of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002, and specifically to the version current on 24.10.2002, the date on which the effect arose.

Having navigated the link in the example, you can then go on to navigate to other provisions within the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002 by clicking on the ‘View contents of this legislation’ link near the top right hand corner of the page.

This will take you to a ‘Results within legislation’ page for the Act, at the top of which you will be presented with a facility to ‘Refine date/ extent’.

The reason for this is that, when you follow a link, the system is no longer constrained by your original search criteria. It is simply taking you to the provision version at which the link is pointing, whatever the date or extent attributes of that version might be. Therefore, when you want to navigate away from that version, the system invites you to specify date and extent criteria again.

The ‘Results within legislation’ that are now listed are those produced by the following date and extent criteria:

These values are pre-filled in the boxes of the ‘Refine date/ extent’ facility. If you are happy with those criteria, you can proceed immediately to select the provision, or higher level of division, at which you want to open the legislation from the results list below. If, on the other hand, you want to see the legislation as at any other date or extent, first change the values in the boxes as required and then click on the ‘Go’ button to refresh the page before proceeding to select from the results list.
