Content of annotations

There are several types of annotation on SLD and the precise form and content will vary according to the circumstances. Here we will consider only the type of annotation that is used for amendments and other effects that you might find in either a C-note or F-note. A typical such annotation on SLD might read like this:

S. 14A(7) applied (with modifications) (30.12.2005) by Adoption and Children Act 2002 (c. 38), s. 29(6) (with Sch. 4 paras. 6-8); S.I. 2005/2213, art. 2(c)

The annotation sets out the following information:

Most of these elements are self-explanatory. See the other sub-topics listed below for brief explanations about how we describe the effects on legislation and how legislation is cited (that is, referred to). There is also a note on the abbreviations used in annotations.

Northern Ireland Variations

In Northern Ireland revised legislation, annotations inserted prior to 2006 do not follow the SLD format described above. Annotations relating to amendments to text generally only refer to the year and number of the amending legislation, while those relating to modifications etc (not altering the text) additionally provide a brief indication of the nature of the effect.
